Health & Nutrition in the News

We present a review of recent health related research stories that made the news with five items comprising: High fruit and veg consumption can increase life expectancy; A rise in Vitamin K supplement popularity; More men taking daily vitamins; Higher omega-3 levels linked to lower risk of depressive symptoms in women; can blueberry flavonoids boost heart health?

Children, Sleep Quality, Behaviour and Omega 3

“Omega-3 status linked to sleep quality in school children: Consumption of omega-3 from food or supplements could help to improve sleep quality in children, according to new data presented yesterday.” Thus ran the Nutraingredients headline reporting on the preliminary data from the Oxford University DOLAB study. Their report (link below) continues:

Vitamin B12 Deficiency and Pernicious Anemia

We get many enquiries from people suffering from acute or on-going symptoms of regular pins and needles in the limbs or similar unusual ‘sensations’; these are either people contacting us directly or via our health practitioner network. The most common causes are a Vitamin B12 deficiency and on occasions problems due to nerve impairment in the back or neck. In the latter case this can often be related to work, home or sports issues such as poor posture for desk workers or those undertaking heavy manual work. It can also more rarely be due to vertebral collapse, which is potentially very serious, so in all instances must be medically assessed.

Folic Acid, Pregnancy, Preconception & NTD (Neural Tube Defects)

“Pregnant women could be offered a new drug to reduce their chances of having a baby with serious defects. Researchers at the Institute of Child Health have developed a treatment that is potentially more effective than folic acid in preventing ‘neural tube defects’ in newborn children.”

Can B-Vitamins Help Deter Alzheimer’s & Dementia?

“Vitamin B could stave off Alzheimer’s – Elderly people could stave off Alzheimer’s disease by taking Vitamin B supplements because they reduce brain shrinkage associated with the disease by up to 90 per cent, a study suggests.” This was the headline in the Daily Telegraph relating to the Oxford University research released in May.

A closer look at Omega 3 – EPA/DHA & the latest Research

Omega 3 is an ‘Essential Fatty Acid’ and the topic of Omega 3 seems never far from the public eye as it is regularly reported on in the mainstream media. The phrase Omega 3 has also made its way more frequently onto food packaging of late – a good example being ‘Omega 3 Fish Fingers’.

Co-enzyme Q10, Heart Health and Statins

‘Researchers discover CoQ10 beats heart disease, claim it as a drug’ ran the headline of the story I read the other day. I was keen to read more about such a vital topic, especially as the story seemed to largely have slipped under the radar as it related to an announcement of research in May.

Full Moon, Insomnia and Magnesium!

Did you catch the item on the news the other day about the full moon and disrupted sleep? I heard it on BBC 4 and found it intriguing. Researchers at Basel University in Switzerland were carrying out some sleep studies and by chance discovered that more disrupted sleep patterns in volunteers coincided with periods of full moon.

Folate (Folic Acid), Mothers-to-be and Pregnant Women

Good news finally for folate in food supplement form – folate (also termed folic acid) has been issued with a ‘favourable opinion’ by EFSA (The European Food Safety Authority). Specifically EFSA has issued a favourable opinion on the use of supplemental folate to reduce the risk of neural tube defects (NTD) such as spina bifida and anencephaly in newborn children.

Preconception Planning

It is estimated that one in six UK couples experience difficulty in conceiving, with poor diet, stress, maintaining a healthy weight and lifestyle issues such as smoking and drinking considered major contributory factors.

Vitamin and Mineral Loss in Hot Weather and when Exercising

As most of us enjoy the unusually hot weather in the UK it is a good time to reflect on how certain vitamin and mineral levels in our body can be adversely affected by heat. A lot of us take the opportunity of such good weather to walk, cycle and play sports. And it’s interesting that studies into the potential loss of certain vitamins and minerals in hot weather are often focused on those undergoing rigorous physical exercise such as sportsman (particularly distance cyclists and runners) and military personnel.

Wind, Bloating and Digestion

A regular excess of wind (‘flatulence’) and bloating of the tummy can be uncomfortable, embarrassing and ultimately stressful. The stress of course does not help as it may exacerbate discomfort in the gut and cause constipation.
